EasyJet has been the target of an attack from a highly sophisticated source, news channels have reported widely.
What happened?
The airline says it closed off the unauthorized access, and a company investigation found that the email address and travel details of approximately 9 million customers were accessed. Additionally, the airline said that the credit card details of around 2,200 customers were also accessed
“There is no evidence that any personal information of any nature has been misused, however… we are communicating with the approximately 9 million customers whose travel details were accessed to advise them of protective steps to minimise any risk of potential phishing”, the airline said in a statement.
What action should you take right now?
If you have used EasyJet, there are a few things we would recommend to be safe:
- Change your login credentials. On your EasyJet account, we recommend that you change your password, consider removing your telephone number and change/delete any other data that you would want kept safe.
- Have you used that password anywhere else? If so, change it now. If you have used your EasyJet password elsewhere, consider changing it everywhere. We recommend that every website should have a very strong and unique password that would be virtually impossible to guess. We set up, use and can assist with LastPass for many of our clients which offers total peace of mind. Hackers will try to use your login details on other platforms. Ask us if you would like our IT Support to help you.
- Check your bank statements. In the days and maybe weeks ahead, keep a careful eye out for any suspicious transactions on your credit card that could result from this. Banks will generally protect you after you have informed them of any breach. Different banks will have different policies for this.
- Implement 2-Factor Authentication. Where systems allow for it, Two Factor uthentication (2FA) gives an additional level of security to protect you. Hive Communications can help you with this and all your IT Support, so please do contact us to discuss it.
- Beware unsolicited emails. We advise you to be very alert if you receive any unsolicited communications. Be cautious of any communications purporting to come from easyJet or easyJet Holidays. We recommend you do not open them before being sure of their origin. Also, with your details accessed, you may have an upsurge in other malicious email traffic also looking like it has come from genuine sources such as banks.
- Check your anti-virus and anti-malware software. In case you got attacked as a result, you should check that you have very secure anti-virus and anti-malware on your computer. At Hive, we are partners of Malwarebytes and can implement our cloud-controlled packages so that we know if there is anything occuring on your computer to be worried about. Please contact us if we can help you at all with our comprehensive IT Support packages.
